YSL is a New York area-wide Organization. We have several athletic, academic, counseling, and college scholarship placement programs in place for our mostly economically disadvantaged inner-city youngsters.
We operate under the umbrella term: delinquency prevention program. However, we are an on-going Program, and thus do not have any "new" programs.
Having said that, we keep improving our programs, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in order to be as relevant as possible to our youth enrollment, and to be the best we can be at what we do.
Our baseball program is specifically designed for the truly dedicated athlete. The program, which begins in January and runs through October, involve intense conditioning activities that test a players mental and physical toughness.
In addition, the program offers sound instruction on the fundamentals of the game that allow players to build on their natural skills.
This program has produced hundreds of players who have gone on to play at both the college and professional level.
Our basketball and intramural sports are for everyone, regardless of skill level, with individuals separated by age and skill level. Intramural sports include soccer and softball and are held, depending on season, both indoors and outdoors.
Our tutoring and counseling activities are both held in groups, in one-on-one sessions, and by peers (youth members with youth members). More and more, the past few years, we have seen the strong positive impact peer counseling and peer tutoring sessions can have, both with and without immediate staff presence.
Included in our tutoring sessions are SAT/ACT lessons for our High School student/athletes, in which we also provide the necessary study material/books. Our counseling sessions are the one activity we hold as strictly confidential.
We are also striving to continue building up our Community Outreach Program, with which to more strongly impact our Kids in their home & school environments. We're thus better (and quicker) able to reach our Kids with a positive & realistic message, especially when negative events are going on around them.
I can honestly say that Youth Service is so far the best thing that has happened to me. It has giving me a chance to succeed in life, not only in sports, but in the real world. So if you want to attempt to be somebody, and you are part of YSL, I would say you are in the right program.
